Brightlites Battery Shout Out

Brightlites battery shoot out

We felt that it would be a good idea to take one of the Led Lenser torches and test how it performed with various sets of brand name batteries. We did this because we wanted to see how realistic Led Lenser had been with their estimated ‘Burn time’ for their products, but we also knew that the relative stamina of each battery type would be a more general indicator of battery value for all electrical and electronic devices and therefore was of much greater general interest.

We used the Lenser V6 6 Chip torch with a rated burn time of up to 50 hours. The same torch was used throughout to avoid any variance in torch characteristics. It is important to note that the results below are based on the time for brand new batteries to extinguish fully (which took a lot longer than we expected!) and NOT usable life span of the batteries, you would want to replace them long before they had completely run out.

Testing conditions

At Brightlites we were very surprised with the results, so we though we had better include some information regarding test conditions. It is important to note that the results above are for guidance only, this was not a laboratory test, it was pretty stringent all the same.

The same torch was used for all tests to ensure consistency, this meant that the results have taken quite a few months in the coming.

Torch used: Lenser V6 6 Chip
Manufacturers Quoted Burn Time: Up to 50 hours
Batteries: AAA x 3

  • Led Lenser Alkaline: From brightlites stock
  • Memorex Alkaline: From brightlites stock
  • Energizer Ultra Alkaline: Purchased from local retailer
  • Duracell Alkaline: Purchased from local retailer
  • Ever Ready Silver Zinc: Purchased from local retailer
  • Panasonic Special Power Zinc: Purchased from local retailer

Environmental factors: In domestic premises at an approximate average ambient room temperature of 18 degrees centigrade.
Battery shelf life: We ensured, via the ‘use by dates’ on each battery pack, that all batteries had at least one year of shelf life left.

IMPORTANT FINAL NOTE: As we said above, the result timings are for new batteries to become fully flat, you will not have a usable beam for this period. We needed to let the batteries fully extinguish to ensure we had a non subjective cut off timing. This does mean that these timings could be + or – 5%.

DISCLAIMER: We have obviously tested these batteries on a single product type (LED torch). Their operational characteristics may vary with different product types, for example, we cannot state that you would get the same relative results with, for example a digital camera. We accept no liability for results that differ from our tests in any respect whatsoever.
